Celebrated vocalist Darius de Haas presented "Wonder: The Songs
of Stevie Wonder" on Monday, December 10 at 7PM at the legendary Birdland (315 West 44th Street,
between 8th & 9th Aves). Following the concert was Jim Caruso's "Cast Party."
From the opening strains of "Ribbon in the Sky" to the
low-down reggae funk of "Master Blaster," de Haas and his jamming eight-piece
pop-soul band celebrated the joyous music of Stevie Wonder. The acclaimed revue
dedicated to Wonder, who de Haas calls "my musical guru, my rock, my Gershwin,"
has blown away music festivals from coast-to-coast.
de Haas notably won The Village Voice's Obie Award in
1998-1999 for his performance in the title role of Running Man. He made his Broadway debut in Kiss of the Spider Woman and went on to be featured in the heralded
Broadway productions including Rent, Marie Christine and Lincoln Center's
revival of Carousel, as well as the
international tour of world premiere I
Was Looking at the Ceiling…, directed by Peter Sellars. de Haas has also
appeared in multiple film and TV projects, and his voice can be heard on the
film soundtracks of Anastasia and the
Oscar-winning Chicago.
