AVI WISNIA
Thursday, September 2 at 7:30 PM

"Think acoustic Americana with Brazilian bossa nova. Drink a caipirinha, and enjoy the sounds that originated in warmer climates." - The L Magazine

Singer/Songwriter Avi Wisnia presents an eclectic mix of refreshingly original songs and inventive covers, finding inspiration in classic Brazilian bossa nova, acoustic American folk, 1950's west-coast jazz, and contemporary pop. Imagine a performer who seamlessly fuses the piano virtuosity of Ben Folds, the subtle stylings of Norah Jones, and the heartbreaking melodies of John Mayer. A wordsmith as well as a composer, Avi's clever lyrics give a knowing nod to his contemporaries, while his smooth vocals assure you that this is truly something new.

2010 has been a busy year for Avi Wisnia. After winning the OutMusic Award for Outstanding Jazz Song of the Year, Avi made a few TV and radio appearances and toured the country with his talented ensemble to promote his debut studio album. The album, "Something New," produced by Grammy-winner Glenn Barratt (Melody Gardot, Amos Lee), positions Avi as a formidable talent and a true artist on the rise.

BANANA BAG & BODICE DOES BEOWULF - A THOUSAND YEARS OF BAGGAGE
Saturday, August 28 at 11:30 PM, Thursday, September 2 at 9:30 PM & Saturday, September 4 at 7:00 PM

After a successful smash-hit run in April, 2009 at the Abrons Arts Center in New York City, and multiple gigs at Lower East Side music venues, Banana Bag & Bodice brings their award-winning epic SongPlay to Joe's Pub. Digging into the roots of the original epic poem, this re-imagined version of Beowulf - A Thousand Years of Baggage hearkens back to the raw and rowdy style of storytelling in the old Scandinavian mead halls - with a passion for fierce poetry and a pint of thick beer. Monsters and professors collide in blood-soaked Scandinavia as this hefty poem is rescued from 1,000 years of analysis and transformed into a defiantly raucous dissertation on art and violence. With an 7-piece band including dueling trombones, bass clarinet, accordion and saw, Beowulf combines Weillian cabaret, 40's jazz harmony, indie rock, punk, electronica and Romantic lieder into a cacophonous swirl.

POLITICAL SUBVERSITIES feat. LIZ SWADOS
Friday, September 3 at 7:30 PM

Initially conceived by 5-time Tony Award Nominee and 3-time Obie Award winner Liz Swados, Political Subversities is a cabaret of darkly funny songs and sketches about culture, politics and the crazy F-ed up world we live in. The Poli-Sub company has dazzled and sold-out The PIT and The Culture Project with this fast-paced and ever-evolving show. A theatrical coup de political comedy birthed by Elizabeth Swados and written by a cast of young actors, writers, singers and sketch comedians.
