Highline Ballroom Announces Events for 3/8-3/14

The Highline Ballroom has announced its upcoming concerts for the week of 3/8. They include: UNISEX SALON with Tina Brown, CINDY BLACKMAN'S ANOTHER LIFETIME, THE MOTH GRANDSLAM XV, AN EVENING WITH KELLER WILLIAMS, and JOE HURLEY'S 11TH ANNUAL ALL-STAR IRISH ROCK REVUE.

UNISEX SALON with Tina Brown

Monday, March 8

80s to the point of excess, Unisex Salon is everything you love to love about the "Me Decade": shameless, upbeat and heavy on the synths. Garishly tattooed, pansexual lead singer Kenyon Phillips brings to mind a modern Adam Ant, mincing, growling and crooning his way through danceable New Wave soundscapes crafted by keyboard player Brian Gumbel, bass player Jansen Cinco (Lukas Haas, Domino Kirke, Charles Tolliver) and former Fun Lovin' Criminals drummer Stephen Borgovini. Backup singer Autumn Ready Potter rounds out the sound with disarmingly pretty harmonies that, like The Osmonds, are a little bit country and a little bit rock n' roll. The band's Bacchanalian live sets have garnered quite a following in their hometown of New York, where they have opened for the likes of The Fratellis and Heloise & The Savoir Faire. Doors at 6:00pm, Show at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10.

CINDY BLACKMAN'S ANOTHER LIFETIME

Wednesday, March 10
Powerhouse drummer Cindy Blackman is a commanding jazz musician, also known for her work backing retro-rock icon Lenny Kravitz. With a kinetic attack, she's ideally equipped to pay tribute to the amazing Tony Williams, whose unique rhythmic genius was immediately evident when he joined the Miles Davis band at 17. Williams soon invented a new and hugely influential drum set vocabulary. He was a key pioneer of ‘70s fusion in the astonishing band Lifetime (with John McLaughlin and Larry Young), and stayed at the forefront of jazz as a leader on Blue Note until his death in 1997. Blackman was mentored by master drummers Art Blakey and Alan Dawson, going on to formative gigs with saxophonists Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders. With fire and finesse, she provides an opportunity to hear one of the true disciples of Tony Williams, perhaps the greatest drummer of his lifetime-or any other. Doors at 6:00pm, Show at 8:00pm. Tickets are $18.00 in advance, $20 at door.

THE MOTH GRANDSLAM XV

Thursday, March 11
Hosted by Dan Kennedy
Doors at 6:00pm, Show at 7:30pm
$20.00
The Moth presents the GrandSLAM, a battle of wits and words - fierce, hilarious, heartbreaking and all points between. The Moth is dedicated to finding intriguing people to tell inspired stories. At The Moth StorySLAM, those people find us. On this night, using words as weapons, they battle it out to determine The Moth's GrandSLAM Story Champion.

AN EVENING WITH KELLER WILLIAMS

Friday, March 12

Keller Williams has built a career on his uncanny ability to captivate a packed house-all by himself. He's been called a "one-man band." A "solo cult-hero." "Music's mad-scientist." All of which are clever labels for what seems to be an essential truth: On stage, Keller Williams works alone. For over 100 shows a year, Williams has proven himself to be a master of improvisational performance art. In his one-man show, he pads barefoot from guitar to bass to percussion stations, using looping effects-and enough instruments to stock a strip-mall music store-to layer sound atop sound until the stage swirls with a full-blown composition. While Keller has made liberal use of technology throughout his career, he knows that musicianship is ultimately a human undertaking. With a seemingly unquenchable thirst for all genres of music - bluegrass, jazz, and-who'd-a-thunk-it-hard rock - occasionally Williams puts unyielding faith in a backing band. Whether performing with solo or with Grateful Grass, Keller, Moseley, Droll and Sipe or Grunge Grass (just a few of his "band" projects), Keller Williams knows best how to please a music hungry crowd. Doors at 8:00pm, Show at 9:00pm. Tickets are $22.50 in advance, $25 at door.

JOE HURLEY'S 11TH ANNUAL ALL-STAR IRISH ROCK REVUE

Saturday, March 13

Doors at 6:00pm, Show at 7:00pm
$20.00 adv, $25 at door
VIP booths for 6 available for $30 per seat
VIP Balcony table seats available for $30 per ticket in groups of 2, 4, or 6
Joe Hurley's 11th Annual All-Star Irish Rock Revue will enter its 2nd decade as the grandest and most beloved musical event of the St Patrick's season in NYC. Gathering friends and performers from NYC punk-rock legends to Broadway stars, from best-selling novelists to star comedians and rock legends-From Rock & Roll Hall-Of-Famers to downtown luminaries from visiting Irish entertainers to up and coming local singers, the performers all dive into Hurley's vision of 'The Great Irish Songbook,' backed by The Revue's sublime All-Star band.
