This Weekend At Cornelia Street Café Fri-Sat Oct 8 & 9 (9:00PM & 10:30PM)
REZ ABBASI ACOUSTIC QUARTET (RAAQ) CD RELEASE
(Rez Abbasi, acoustic guitar; Bill Ware, vibraphone; Stephan Crump, bass; Eric McPherson, drums)

After last years rave response to Rez Abbasi's recording, Things To Come (Sunnyside), the NY guitarist has a new recording with a New Group. RAAQ was formed to serve as an outlet to showcase Abbasi's playing on acoustic guitar. The chamber- like group captures a fresh sound that is unique in jazz. With the acoustic guitar and vibraphone cascading into each other over the hard interactive grooves of bass and drums, RAAQ creates a driving and open textural experience for the listener. The group is comprised of vibraphonist, Bill Ware (Steely Dan), bassist, Stephan Crump (Vijay Iyer Trio) and drummer, Eric McPherson (Andrew Hill). RAAQ performs Abbasi's complex yet earthy compositions as well as rarely heard gems from other composers. In 2010, by invitation from jazz impresario George Wein, they performed at the famed Newport Jazz Fest. The group now celebrates their inspired debut recording with a weekend at the Cornelia St. Cafe.
"An amazing guitarist...unique and beautiful music - and best of all - very original...I'm really impressed." Pat Metheny

"Abbasi creates a sinuous, sometimes haunting and always evocative blend of contemporary jazz and Asian influences." Time Out New York

"As jazz increasingly admits sounds from around the globe, Abbasi's efforts rank among the freshest and most compelling. Compositions that stand alone in today's jazz." Ottawa Citizen

Partial proceeds will be donated to the flood victims in Pakistan. This event is part of the Daniel Pearl World Music Days www.danielpearlmusicdays.org

Sun Oct 10 (8:30PM)
ANDREW RATHBUN CD RELEASE EVENT FOR THE IDEA OF NORTH
(Andrew Rathbun, saxophones; Taylor Haskins, trumpet; Nate Radley, guitar; Frank Carlberg, piano, electric piano; Jay Anderson, bass; Ted Poor, drums)

Andrew Rathbun's fourth leader album on SteepleChase reflects his musical ideas inspired by fellow Canadian Glenn Gould and looks into the implication of his homeland Canada on his music.
"... he displays his growing maturity as a player and more of his acclaimed talents as composer/arranger." Mark Corroto, Allabout Jazz-NY on his previous release SCCD 31665 Where We Are Now

"In Rathbun's case, the sensations embedded in his music are both of the now and then, pushing ahead while taking stock of jazz's past, particularly in the more reflective musings of classical-tinged lyricism and chamberesque compositional ideas." Josef Woodard, JAZZTIMES, on Where We Are Now
